From the 1980 insurgence to the 2009 Boko Haram uprising, Nigeria was launched into ethno-religious skirmishes’ with overwhelming human and material losses. These uprising of July 2009 was significant in that it not only set a standard, nevertheless also strengthened the attempts by Islamic conservative fundamentalist at levying a variation of Islamic religious principles on a secular state. This group of Northern Nigerian militants transformed from political brigandage declared a war on the country in the name of Islamic jihad. This has claimed thousands of lives, dire humanitarian situation as evident in human right abuses, population displacement and refugee debacle, livelihood crisis, and public insecurity.
In a statement issued by Boko Haram group in Maiduguri on April 24, 2011, Suleiman (2011), reported that their objectives were to abolish democracy and institute sharia law as they claimed to be fighting for justice and Iislamization of Nigeria. According to Suleiman, one of the group spokesmen Alzawahiri stated that the group was contented with preaching islamisation of Nigeria until 2009 when it took arms against the state because some unnamed Muslim clerics and ward heads in the North were conniving with the government to attack them following the Maiduguri crisis in July, 2009. For this reason, the spokesman submitted that: “we would continue to fight until Islam is well established and the Muslims regain their freedom all over Nigeria. We would never be ready to compromise and we don’t need amnesty. The only solution to what is happening is for the government to repent, jettison democracy, drop the constitution and adopt the laws in the Holy Qur’an (Suleiman, 2011:50). Boko Haram insurgency has resulted in dire humanitarian situation as evident in human casualties, human right abuses, population displacement and refugee debacle, livelihood crisis, and public insecurity.
Due to the mindset of the Northern Islamic ruling class for decades, Nigeria is presently in a state of disequilibrium as activities in the various social institutions have become rather unethical and synonymous with decadence. Consequently, the Nigerian society is presently characterized by social malaise created by decades of Islamic agenda, insecurity of life, poverty, armed robbery, all forms of corruption, moral degeneration, succession crisis, and a general lack of accountability and empathy by those entrusted with governance.
Upon the death of my mother in 2016, I travelled to Otuo- Nigeria for her burial ceremony, to my horror and broken heart I saw for the first time how bad Nigeria had decade. I was horrified when I saw how Azama College (high school) has become a war torn dissolute place where no human beings are supposed to live. To my utter most disappointment and dismay, these dilapidated crumbling institution still school children. I cried and lamented over what I saw happening to a society I left forty years ago that was vibrant producing future generations of leaders before I left for USA. Azama College (high school) died and needs resurrection.
To this end my church and I have being working diligently to help restore Azama College to her rightful place as a least restrictive institution of learning. So I am appealing to you to support Azama Progressive Foundation. Without your support my church South Main Baptist Church and this Foundation cannot accomplish our goals of restoration.
